My name is Kate Moffat and I am the nutritionist at Dr Steve Joe Integrative Medicine.
Holistic health and nutrition is my passion and I am lucky enough to have one of the best jobs in the world, working alongside Dr Steve Joe to bring patients the best holistic nutrition and health advise possible.
Having spent the last year learning from Dr Joe, his philosophy of health, testing methods and treatment combined with my own learning (I have a BSc from the University of Auckland, a Graduate Certificate in Human Nutrition and a Diploma in Therapeutic Massage) has given me a well-rounded knowledge of nutrition and health.
Nutrition is such an important part of wellness, like many people in the health industry I had my own experiences of ill health which inspired me to learn more. I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease in 2006 and after many years of being unwell this diagnosis was welcomed, finally I knew what was wrong.
Like many coeliacs going gluten free alone was not enough to get me well. I was suffering from brain fog, fatigue, regular sinus infections, stomach issues and was generally feeling unwell. I was a regular visitor to my local GP but nothing I tried worked, until I found Integrative Medicine.
Discovering I had candida in my gut, leaky gut (often called intestinal permeability), adrenal fatigue/low thyroid function, toxicity and low energy production has been life changing, treating all of this made an incredible difference to my health. I feel well!
I dove into the world of holistic nutrition curious to learn more, I am curious about others health, continually researching and learning new ways to help people feel well.
Dr Joe has taught me basic Applied Kinesiology, which I use to test for the underlying causes of symptoms and use dietary modification and supplements to treat these.
Some of the diets I work with on a regular basis are the GAPs diet, Specific Carbohydrate Diet, Paleo, Ketogenic diet, Low Oxalate diet, Salicylate’s, Candida Control Diet, Gluten free, Dairy free and Soy free.
I do not have one nutritional philosophy that I work by and I do not put everyone with gut issues or fatigue on the same food guide. I am often modifying the above diets to suit each patient. Healthy eating for everyone looks different.
I have knowledge in how to treat and improve IBS, coeliac disease, fatigue, PMT, heavy periods and other estrogen related problems, food allergies and allergies in general. Getting to the cause of your symptoms is my aim.
There is a lot of information on the internet about nutrition and health, coming to see me will take the confusion away, I look at what is going on with you as a whole, whether it be your gut bacteria, hormone production, energy levels and toxin exposure and use dietary modification and supplementation where necessary to improve your health. You will leave with a plan for your journey to health, and what an exciting journey it is!
If you are unable to come to Hamilton to see me, I hope this blog will provide some information on how you can improve your health.
